Why Wheel Bolt Selection Matters
Wheel bolts are engineered components. Using the wrong thread pitch, under-strength grade, or incompatible shank length can lead to:
- Wheel separation while driving
- Thread stripping during installation
- Corrosion-induced seizing (especially in salted-road markets like Russia and Northern Europe)
- Premature fatigue failure under heavy loads
Step 1: Determine the Correct Thread Size
Thread size follows the format: M [diameter] × [pitch] — Example: M20 × 1.5
| Size | Application |
|---|---|
| M18 × 1.5 | Light trucks, some Japanese brands |
| M20 × 1.5 | Medium trucks, European trailers |
| M22 × 1.5 | Heavy trucks (Volvo, Scania, MAN, Mercedes) |
| M24 × 2.0 | Extreme heavy duty, mining trucks |
Step 2: Choose the Right Strength Grade
| Grade | Tensile Strength | Application |
|---|---|---|
| 8.8 | 800 MPa | Light trucks, trailers, non-critical |
| 10.9 | 1,040 MPa | ★ Standard heavy trucks (most common) |
| 12.9 | 1,220 MPa | Extreme load, severe duty |
Rule of thumb: 10.9 covers 80%+ of commercial vehicles. HOJON stocks all three grades.
Step 3: Select the Surface Treatment
| Treatment | Corrosion Resistance | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| Black Phosphate | Moderate | Dry environments |
| Zinc Plated | Good | General use, mild climates |
| Dacromet / Geomet | Excellent | Russia, Northern Europe (salted roads) |
Press-Fit vs Through-Bolt
Press-Fit: Installed from the back with a knurled shank. Common for European trucks. Through-Bolt: Slid through from the front with a nut. Easier to replace but less common in European heavy trucks.
Torque Specifications
| Bolt Size | Typical Torque (10.9) |
|---|---|
| M18 | 250-300 Nm |
| M20 | 350-450 Nm |
| M22 | 450-550 Nm |
| M24 | 550-650 Nm |
Always use a calibrated torque wrench. Impact guns often over-torque, leading to bolt failure.
